Arsenal target £10m Liverpool winger in January raid
Arsenal transfer news: Stewart Downing linked with shock move from Liverpool
Arsenal are being linked with a shock move for out-of-favour Liverpool winger Stewart Downing in the January transfer window.
The Mail on Sunday claims Gunners boss Arsene Wenger is preparing a £10 million offer for the England international, who was wanted at the Emirates Stadium in 2011 before moving to Anfield.
Reds boss Brendan Rodgers does not want Downing on Merseyside anymore, according to the report, with the manager losing faith in a left-sided midfielder who has lost form dramatically since making a £20 million switch to the club.
Ex-Liverpool manager Kenny Dalglish drafted the player in from Aston Villa during his reign in charge, but the 34-cap international was unable to provide a goal or assist for the club legend during last season’s disappointing campaign.
Wenger is confident Downing’s ability would make him a good fit in the Arsenal side however, with the paper going on to claim that the Frenchman believes the player would add balance on the left flank in north London.
Capable of playing at left-back, Downing would also provide added versatility for Arsenal as they look to challenge for a top four place in the Premier League.
The Mail also intimates that Liverpool could look to use the player as part of a deal to bring Theo Walcott to the club in 2013.
