Former Manchester United striker Ruud van Nistelrooy has backed the club's latest Dutch marksman, Robin van Persie, to fire the Red Devils to the Premier League title this season.
Van Persie has scored 11 goals in 16 appearances for Manchester United in all competitions since his £24 million summer transfer for Arsenal, and Van Nistelrooy has been impressed with how quickly his compatriot has adapted.
Van Nistelrooy found the net exactly 150 times in his 219 appearances for Manchester United, but won the league title only once during his five seasons at Old Trafford.
Manchester United could potentially face a similar barren spell following Manchester City's Premier League triumph last season, although the former currently top the table after 13 games.
And Van Nistelrooy believes the acquisition of Van Persie has made Manchester United a force too powerful for Manchester City, and expects the 29-year-old to lead Sir Alex Ferguson's side to a 20th league crown.
"As Robin is proving right now, he’s making the difference on many occasions," Van Nistelrooy told The Mirror.
"If he can keep going like this through the whole season then I can see United landing another title win.
"I’m happy I’ve hung up my boots and now I can enjoy watching Robin play. I spoke to him a little while ago and congratulated him on his fantastic start.
"I wished him well and told him to continue like this. It feels like he’s been here for ever. He started scoring, got his first goal quickly and hasn’t stopped since, so hopefully it will continue.
"I think he’s fitted in really well at United. It’s important for a striker when he goes to a new club to start getting his goals in early.
"That’s what happened to Robin. He has the experience of the Premier League already and he’s proved to be a great signing, the way he plays."
