Liverpool are reportedly in talks with Lyon over the possible signing of France international Bafetimbi Gomis.

According to Metro, the Anfield club have begun discussions over a possible move for the 27-year-old in a bid to ease some of the goalscoring burden on Luis Suarez.

The Uruguayan has been Liverpool’s key player so far this season, scoring ten goals in the Premier League, but Reds manager Brendan Rodgers will be worried at the lack of other goalscorers in his side.

The report claims Rodgers wants to find another centre-forward in Janaury, as Suarez is the only fit senior option in the centre-forward role thanks to the failure to replace Andy Carroll after letting him go in the transfer window and an injury to summer signing Fabio Borini.

It also says Liverpool’s preferred options were Athletic Bilbao’s Fernando Llorente of Valencia’s Roberto Soldado, but Gomis would be a much cheaper option in transfer fee and wages.

Gomis has started the season at a blistering pace, already scoring nine goals in just 14 appearances and the report claims the Merseysiders have readied an £8million January bid for him.

The Frenchman would provide something of a contrast to Suarez, as he is tall and powerful, though remains quick and his link up play his strong.

Gomis’ goals have propelled Lyon to the top of Ligue 1 so far this season, ahead of big-spenders PSG who can send out the likes of Zlatan Ibrahimovic, Thiago Silva and Ezequiel Lavezzi.

Liverpool need more options up front and it was highlighted in the 2-1 defeat to Tottenham Hotspur at White Hart Lane on Wednesday, where the majority of possession and pressure in the second half could not produce the goals that were needed to reduce a 2-0 half-time deficit.
