With the January transfer window less than one month away, excitement is already starting to build around possible deals in the New Year.
Plenty of clubs are in the market for players; with some of the best in the English top flight looking to strengthen for either a Premier League title challenge, top four finish or Europa League spot.
Managers will have been working away on their own shortlists, and fans certainly have their opinions on the type of player that they think needs to be added at their particular club.
The beauty of the January transfer window is that it can occasionally throw up surprises. One big move by a club can force another’s hand. The Fernando Torres-Andy Carroll saga was a perfect example in 2011.
However, such moves are rare, and whilst national newspapers try their best to make us believe that massive transfers are around the corner, we know the majority of deals are a long shot.
And so, with 2013 just around the corner, GiveMeFootball decided to pull together its favourite transfer rumours over the past couple of months. All are highly unlikely, but all make the headlines in the press for obvious reasons.
Don’t forget to let us know what you think might happen when the window opens, and which player you dream of signing at your club…
Cristiano Ronaldo to Manchester United
The ultimate fantasy for Manchester United fans around the world, but reports in The Daily Mirror back in September claimed Sir Alex Ferguson wanted the winger back at Old Trafford at any cost.
Whether the owners of the Red Devils would be willing to fork out a figure in the region of £100 million is another matter, and if they want to take Real Madrid out of the occasion, an £800 million buy-out clause would make life easy.
Luis Suarez to Chelsea
When Torres joined the Blues for £50 million, it proved one thing – money can buy you almost anything in football. The Sunday People claimed the Reds would demand the same fee if Chelsea pursued Suarez in January.
Selling the Uruguayan would be a disastrous move for the Anfield outfit, with Suarez the club’s leading scorer in the Premier League and only fit senior striker currently on the books.
Benoit Assou-Ekotto to Chelsea
With Ashley Cole set to leave Chelsea on a free transfer, it’s no surprise that left-backs are being linked with a move to Stamford Bridge, with The Guardian reporting that Assou-Ekotto was on the radar in October.
However, a switch from north to west London would be a surprise for the Cameroonian international’s, given that he’s been out of the first team for Tottenham Hotspur through injury this season.
Frank Lampard to Arsenal
Lampard is another player whose contract is coming to an end with Chelsea, with a host of clubs interested in signing the England international midfielder.
Arsenal are one of those recently linked with a move for the player in The Sunday Mirror, but a move to the Gunners from one of their rivals would seriously jeopardise the player’s status at Chelsea.
Fernando Torres to Manchester City
Reports in The Daily Telegraph less than a fortnight ago claimed Manchester City boss Roberto Mancini was still interested in bringing Torres to the Etihad Stadium.
Out of form on the King's Road, the Spaniard would face huge competition for a place in the Citizens side, and is hardly showing the form required to compete against Aguero, Tevez & Co. A non-starter for sure.
