Manchester United missed out on Sao Paulo winger Lucas Moura this summer and his latest boast will likely see them regret it further – he believes he is a similar player to Barcelona star Lionel Messi.
Sir Alex Ferguson’s side were reportedly close to sealing the signature of the highly-rated Brazil international, but he eventually opted for a the more lucrative surrounds of big-spenders PSG.
The Ligue 1 leaders agreed a deal for the 20-year-old in August for a French record fee of €45million and he will join up with Carlo Ancelotti’s side in January, which will be a welcome boost to PSG’s stuttering title bid.
Watching highlights of Moura, it is understandable as to why Manchester United wanted to bring him to Old Trafford, as he is extremely quick and has supreme dribbling abilities that make beating opposition defenders look easy.
It takes confidence to play the way Moura does and he indicates that is something he possesses in substantial amounts by claiming he is a similar player to Camp Nou superstar Lionel Messi.
"In my opinion, my style compares to Messi's," he told France Football on Tuesday.
The Sao Paulo star also claimed he and Lionel Messi share the same determination to stay on their feet, even though continually kicked by opponents trying to stop them.
“We grab the ball and immediately go on the attack. We take knocks but we stay on our feet,” he added.
“Messi's dribbling is also towards the goal...he does not fall, does not dive; when he's fouled, he does not stay on the ground.
“That is why I like him a lot and why I see myself in him.”
It would be a bitter blow to Manchester United if they missed out on Moura and he becomes a player the stature of Messi, but the Argentina is so rare a talent that this is highly unlikely.
However, PSG’s look to have done a wise thing by beating United to his signature, as they will soon have a very special player to call upon.
