Cristiano Ronaldo ensured that at least one goal record was broken this week as his effort against Ajax in the Champions League ensured 2012 became the Portuguese star's most prolific year in terms of goals.
While much of the focus has been on Lionel Messi and whether the Barcelona forward will break Gerd Muller’s 40 year old record for most goals in a calendar year, Ronaldo past his own personal record for most goals in a single year with his strike against Ajax, which moved him to 61 for 2012, including five for Portugal.
He bettered his total of last year in which he managed 60 goals including 7 for his country – although he still couldn't quite match Messi, who scored 50 league goals and beat Gerd Muller’s record for most goals in a single season with 73 strikes.
Ronaldo’s goal against Ajax also meant that the Real Madrid forward moved ahead of Messi in the Champions League top scorers list. Ronaldo now has 6 goals in European competition, ahead of Messi, Chelsea’s Oscar and Sporting Braga’s Alan and level with Burak Yilmaz of Galatasaray.
The two rivals will continue their battle when the Ballon d’Or is announced in the new year, with Messi the favourite for a record 4th award.
Barcelona were handed a shock last night when diminutive Argentinian was stretchered off in their Champions League game against Benfica with what looked to be a serious knee injury, although the club have since confirmed he is in contention to face Real Betis this weekend.
