Manchester United and Manchester City have played out some thrilling derby matches in recent times, with the re-emergence of the Citizens playing its part in a renewed hostility.
Substantial foreign investment has allowed Roberto Mancini to build a side that last year proved it was capable of both challenging the Red Devils and winning the Premier League title.
That said, it’s United who have won the majority of the big games when they have mattered in recent times, and Sir Alex Ferguson’s side remain the team to beat domestically.
And so, ahead of this weekend’s Manchester derby at the Etihad Stadium, GiveMeFootball decided to look back at the best matches between the two great sides in recent times.
Tomorrow (Friday), we’ll be looking more specifically at Wayne Rooney’s greatest moments in the Manchester derby, but for today, it’s all about the teams. Let us know if you think we’ve missed out a recent classic, or if one of these games is your all-time favourite…
1) Manchester United 4-3 Manchester City
Premier League; 20th September, 2009
Michael Owen’s spell at Old Trafford didn’t quite go as the former England international would have hoped, but he’ll always be remembered for scoring the winner in the 96th minute of this pulsating derby.
Both sides traded goals throughout, with Wayne Rooney opening the scoring before Gareth Barry’s equaliser. Darren Fletcher and Craig Bellamy both bagged braces, before Owen’s late intervention gave the hosts all three points.
Mark Hughes fumed as United capitalised in ‘Fergie Time’, as Owen was found in space and fired low across Shay Given.
2) Manchester United 1-6 Manchester City
Premier League; 23rd October, 2011
A humbling defeat for United as the Citizens showed they were genuine title contenders at Old Trafford.
Mario ‘why always me’ Balotelli gave the visitors a first-half lead, and doubled his total in the second period before Sergio Aguero made it 3-0.
Fletcher gave his side hope of an unlikely comeback in the 80th minute, but two late goals from Edin Dzeko sealed an amazing win for City, with his goals separated by a fine David Silva effort.
3) Manchester City 2-3 Manchester United
FA Cup Third Round; 8th January, 2012
A game full of surprises, started by the inclusion of Paul Scholes – who had previously retired in the summer – in the 18-man squad.
United were in complete control after Rooney gave the visitors the lead and Vincent Kompany was sent-off for a challenge on Nani. Danny Welbeck and another Rooney strike made it 3-0 at half-time.
However, goals from Aleksandar Kolarov and Sergio Aguero made for a stunning second-half, with United progressing at the expense of their rivals.
4) Manchester United 3-1 Manchester City
League Cup semi-final, second leg; 27th January, 2010
After Manchester City’s 2-1 win in the first leg – courtesy of two goals from Carlos Tevez – United had it all to do in the return clash at Old Trafford.
However, goals from Scholes and Michael Carrick appeared to send United to the final, before the Argentine striker pulled one back.
With extra-time looming, Rooney popped up with a far post header to break City hearts again before delirium ensued at Old Trafford.
5) Manchester City 3-1 Manchester United
Premier League; 9th November, 2002
A game that many City fans believe they simply had to win, with bragging rights going to Kevin Keegan in the last Manchester derby at Maine Road.
Nicolas Anelka gave the hosts an early lead but Ole Gunnar-Solskjaer wiped that out just three minutes later.
Club legend Shaun Goater put City back in-front on 26 minutes, capitalising on an error from Gary Neville, before Eyal Berkovic made sure of the victory.
