Excitement has been building around Barcelona star Lionel Messi’s every goal recently, with him just one behind Gerd Muller’s 40-year-old record for strikes in a calendar year – or is he?

Possibly not, according to Spanish language ESPN. The sports television channel has brought into question whether Muller’s record was actually the 85 recorded by FIFA in 1972 and claimed Messi may have already equalled the tally posted by ‘Der Bomber’.

The Camp Nou favourite has posted 84 goals so far this year and looks destined to surpass Muller as Barcelona have another five matches scheduled, but the sight of Messi being stretchered off the pitch on Wednesday night may have people worried whether history can be made.

ESPN have drawn attention to a game between West Germany and U.S.S.R in May of that year, where Muller scored four in a 4-1 victory in front of a packed Munich Olympiastadion.

The video takes a closer look at one of the goals and the presenters posit that Muller’s mopping up of a rebound actually goes in off of the Soviet goalkeeper Yevgeni Rudakov and should possibly have been given as an own goal.

That would mean the record is only 84 and Lionel Messi has already equalled it and needs only one from the remaining five fixtures to become the holder of one of the greatest goalscoring records in football.
