Chelsea are stepping up their chase for another striker and have sent a trusted advisor of Roman Abramovich to begin negotiations for Radamel Falcao and Gonzalo Higuain.
According to The Telegraph, Marina Granovskaia was sent to Spain at the weekend by the Stamford Bridge club’s owner to sound out both Real Madrid and Atletico Madrid about the possibility of signing one of the pair.
It claims Chelsea are not alone in their admiration for Falcao, as both Manchester City and Real Madrid are interested in the Colombian that has a buyout clause in his contract worth £48million.
The search for another goalscorer in January came about because of Fernando Torres’s failure to score in the Premier League for two months, until Saturday.
Torres followed up his double in the Champions League on Wednesday by bagging another brace in the 3-1 win over Sunderland, reportedly not that long after Granovskaia was despatched on the shopping trip.
The report also claims that Chelsea are considering rivalling Arsenal for Newcastle United striker Demba Ba, whom also has a release clause but would be a much cheaper option at £7million.
It is not great timing for Torres as he appears to be finding some form after a long barren run and the news that Abramovich has green-lighted an approach for another big money signing could have an adverse effect on him.
