Manchester United, Arsenal and Chelsea are set to be disappointed as Borussia Dortmund defender Neven Subotic looks likely to sign a new contract.
According to Sky Sports, the 23-year-old centre-back has agreed terms with the reigning Bundesliga champions and they claim he has been watched by the likes of Sir Alex Ferguson and Arsene Wenger, as well as impressing Stamford Bridge scouts.
The Serbia international’s current contract expires in 2014 and the report says talks of an extension to 2016 are well advanced, meaning any move to Emirates Stadium or Old Trafford would become highly unlikely.
Manchester United have a full compliment of centre-backs at the moment, but long-term plans will have to be made owing to Rio Ferdinand’s age and Nemanja Vidic’s fitness problems.
The former England captain is now 34 years old and has struggled with consistency in recent years, while Vidic has hardly played in 2012 because of two serious knee injuries, calling into question his ability to stay fit.
Meanwhile, Arsenal have depth but alack of quality and Wenger’s interest may have had something to do with Sebastien Squillaci and Johan Djourou failing to impress while deputising for the three main contenders for the two positions – Per Mertesacker, Thomas Vermaelen and Laurent Koscielny.
