Steven Gerrard: Top four by New Year

Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard has told his team-mates to capitalise fully on some good form and a run of winnable games in December to make a push for the top four.

Brendan Rodgers' side are up to tenth in the Premier League following the 3-2 comeback win over West Ham United on Sunday evening, which leaves them just four points behind Merseyside rivals Everton, who are in fourth.

Victory at Upton Park meant Liverpool had won back to back games in the league for the first time this season and Gerrard wants to push on from those positives into their next two fixtures, which are at home to Aston Villa and Fulham.

Gerrard demanded two wins at Anfield and believes that could give them the momentum to get very close to fourth by the time New Year comes around.

“We’re building slowly towards where we want to be. We’ve got two home games now against Aston Villa and Fulham,” he told the Liverpool Echo.

“If we can capitalise and make it 12 points out of 12 then we will find ourselves a lot closer to fourth.

“It’s a platform to build on. We just have to focus on Villa now. Come the end of December we’re really looking to be close to that fourth position.”

Rodgers’ side put in an impressive showing in the win over West Ham and it came as a surprise to many as suspension had deprived the Reds of their star man, Luis Suarez.

The Uruguayan has been magnificent as the only senior striker in the Liverpool squad and many commentators felt they would struggle without him.

Gerrard acknowledged this and claimed it made him feel more proud as Rodgers’ side had been able to prove their doubters wrong.

“I’m really pleased with the lads. It was a fantastic performance,” added the Anfield skipper.

“I think before the game people were doubting us and thinking we would be a bit toothless in the final third without our top striker.

“But we’ve gone away from home, scored three goals and got the three points we came here for.”
