Chelsea £5m Dutch starlet capture

Chelsea are considering a bid for Feyenoord’s starlet captain and could land him at the bargain price of £5million.

Stefan de Vrij has been a revelation since breaking into the first team as a 17-year-old and now, aged only 20, he has taken on the captain’s armband.

He inherited it from Ron Vlaar when the Holland international joined Aston Villa, but his refusal to sign a new deal on two separate occasions has prompted Chelsea to take an interest and plot a January bid, according to Metro.

The report claims the Stamford Bridge club believe a bid in the region of £5million may be enough to prise the star centre-back away from the Eredivisie side, as club officials are considering a sale after growing frustrated with his stance.

De Vrij’s contract does not expire until the summer of 2014, but his reported refusal to sign a new deal could indicate he is interested in looking abroad for more lucrative terms, something that Roman Abramovich is more than able to give him.

Chelsea have no shortage of centre-backs but De Vrij’s age, and John Terry not getting any younger, make him an attractive target with an eye on the future, especially at such a low price.

Were De Vrij to join Chelsea, he would be the only Dutchman in the senior squad.
