Tottenham Hotspur host Liverpool in one of the Premier League’s big midweek matches, with both sides desperate for victory in the battle for European places.

After victory at the weekend against West Ham United, manager Andre Villas-Boas is unlikely to make too many changes to his side, with Hugo Lloris tipped to retain his place between the sticks ahead of Brad Friedel.

For Brendan Rodgers, a clean sheet in the draw at Swansea City was a positive, and will lead to Pepe Reina retaining his place in goal for the Reds.

In defence, Andre Wisdom is fit to return at right-back, with Glen Johnson set to switch to the left flank in place of Stewart Downing. Daniel Agger and Martin Skrtel will again be at the heart of the back four.

Spurs seem to have a settled back four in the absence of the injured Younes Kaboul and Benoit Assou-Ekotto, with Kyle Walker, Michael Dawson, Steven Caulker and Jan Vertonghen protecting their French stopper.

Liverpool will line-up with their usual 4-3-3/4-5-1 line-up, meaning a midfield trio of Joe Allen, Steven Gerrard and either Jonjo Shelvey, Nuri Sahin or Jordan Henderson. Shelvey impressed off the bench at the weekend, and could get the nod in north London.

Sandro and Tom Huddlestone have formed a solid partnership shielding the defence at White Hart Lane, with Aaron Lennon, Clint Dempsey and Gareth Bale playing in more advanced positions in a 4-2-3-1 formation.

Jermain Defoe will lead the line for Tottenham Hotspur, with Emmanuel Adebayor still suspended.

For Liverpool, Raheem Sterling and surprise package Jose Enrique are likely to play in the wide positions, with Luis Suarez the spearhead for the Merseyside giants.
