Chelsea are being linked with a sensational January move for German international striker Mario Gomez.

The Daily Express claims the Blues are considering a big-money bid to lure the player to Stamford Bridge from Bayern Munich, with a figure in the region of £40 million mooted.

Gomez has played a limited number of games at the Allianz Arena this season, with an ankle injury partly to blame for his spell on the sidelines in the Bundesliga.

However, manager Jupp Heynckes has kept faith with Croatian international Mario Mandzukic, who has impressed in the absence of Gomez.

The report c ims Chelsea continue to have concerns over the form of Spanish striker Fernando Torres, and whilst new manager Rafa Benitez has a track-record of getting the best out of his compatriot, Gomez has been ‘identified’ as the type of player who could improve the club’s attacking options in west London.

Chelsea also regard Gomez as a ‘marquee’ signing, according to the report, and with fans unhappy at the departure of Roberto Di Matteo, his signing could go some way to appeasing supporters.

A 57-cap international, the former Stuttgart star isn’t the only forward on the Chelsea radar however, with Wilfried Bony heavily linked with a move in the New Year.
