Liverpool star Lucas believes Brendan Rodgers should try to bring his Brazilian compatriot Leandro Damiao to Anfield, after admitting it would be "almost impossible" for the Reds to sign Neymar.

Speaking to FourFourTwo, the Brazil international suggested Liverpool look to sign the Internacional forward, who hit six goals in six matches during this summer's London Olympics.

The Anfield club find themselves desperately short of options up front, following injury to former-Roma striker Fabio Borini. The Italian's fractured foot leaves Luis Suarez as Rodgers' only senior striker option.

So, when asked which of his Brazil team-mates he thought could help fire Liverpool up the Premier League table, Lucas told FourFourTwo: "The consensus in Brazil would be Neymar. He is a different player now: a promise turned into reality. But I know signing him would be very hard, almost impossible.

"So among the other players who are currently in Brazil I would choose Leandro Damiao. He would suit the Premier League very well, as he is a strong centre-forward who finishes very well and knows how to play with his back to goal."

Damiao has been a long-term target for Tottenham Hotspur, but recent reports have suggested Andre Villas-Boas will turn his attention elsewhere when the transfer window reopens in January.

The Spurs boss has been linked with moves for Shakhtar sensation Willian, and Ajax playmaker Christian Eriksen.

Liverpool received some good news earlier this week when Lucas returned to training following a three-month injury lay-off.
