Manchester United defender Rio Ferdinand believes the recent years of success at Old Trafford is built on a firm base of stability.

The 34-year-old centre back was speaking in the wake of Roberto Di Matteo’s shock departure from the hot seat at Chelsea, with the Italian manager sacked following a 3-0 Champions League defeat to Juventus.

Di Matteo had been at the Blues helm for 262 days, compared to the 26-year reign that Sir Alex Ferguson has enjoyed at Manchester United since taking charge in 1986.

In that time, the Red Devils have won 12 Premier League titles, five FA Cups, four League Cups and two Champions Leagues – a trophy cabinet Chelsea could only dream of as owner Roman Abramovich continues to search for a winning formula in west London.

“Wow, Chelsea have sacked their manager!! I'm a bit late I know but that's madness,” wrote the 81-cap England international on his official Facebook page.

“The stability at our club is something our manager rarely gets praise for...don't under estimate that.”

Ferdinand was rested last night as Manchester United fell to their first Champions League defeat of the season against Galatasaray.

Ferguson shuffled his pack for the trip to Turkey with qualification already assured from Group H, but the visitors left the Turk Telekom Arena with nothing after a 1-0 defeat.
