Manchester United planning January swoop for Benfica winger

Published Add your comment

Manchester United could reportedly launch a move for Benfica winger Ola John in the January transfer window after Sir Alex Ferguson sent a scout to watch the Dutchman in action.

John only signed for Benfica from Twente in the summer but, according to A Bola, Manchester United are considering making an approach for the 20-year-old.

Manchester United manager Ferguson reportedly sent brother Martin - his most trusted scout - to watch John in Benfica draw with Barcelona at the Camp Nou last week, and a January bid could now be in the offing.

John has hardly pulled up trees since his move to Portugal, but Ferguson is reported to see plenty of potential in the Netherlands under-21 international, and would consider bringing him to Old Trafford.

The youngster may seemingly be recruited as a long-term replacement for Luis Nani, whose future with Manchester United is becoming increasingly doubtful.

Reports on Tuesday claim the 26-year-old is a January target for Arsenal with Nani now out of favour at Manchester United as talks over a new contract stall.
