Barcelona superstar Lionel Messi may have broken the record for goals scored in a calendar year, but Cristiano Ronaldo has had a better 2012.
That is the view of former Real Madrid midfielder and director of football Pedrag Mijatovic, who feels that Ronaldo should win the 2012 FIFA Ballon d’Or ahead of Messi, the current favourite.
“I would like it if Cristiano Ronaldo wins it, he has done better than Messi this year in my opinion,” he is reported as saying in a Goal.com report.
While Mijatovic must, of course, have his opinion, it seems bizarre to make such a claim just days after Messi broke the world record for goals scored in a calendar year when bagging his 85th and 86th of 2012 against Real Betis on Sunday evening.
The previous record was held by West Germany legend Gerd Muller, which he set in 1972.
Mijatovic’s history with Real Madrid could be used by some as an explanation of his view, but there are legitimate arguments to support his case.
Messi may have had an exceptional year individually but a Copa del Rey victory was all Barcelona had to show for it.
The Camp Nou club’s Liga title was taken from them by Real Madrid, led by Ronaldo, which is probably the more impressive trophy of the two.
However, 2012 seems to be ending well for the Catalans and 2013 looks like becoming another vintage year for Messi and his team-mates.
They are six points clear at the top of the Primera Division, 11 ahead of Jose Mourinho’s side, and have made a record-breaking start to the season, while their form looks ominous for possible opponents in the Champions League last 16.
Mijatovic is not concerned by the gap between the two clubs and said there is plenty of time for Real Madrid to catch up, claiming Barcelona were certain to start dropping points soon.
“It's a significant gap, but we should not forget that May is still far away. There's plenty of football to be played and Barcelona will start spilling points at some point,” he added.
