Tom Cleverley can become an top quality goalscoring midfielder at Manchester United, but only if he watches and listens to Old Trafford legend Paul Scholes, according to Bryan Robson.

Also a legend at Manchester United, Robson was waxing lyrical over Cleverley’s performance in the dramatic Manchester derby up against Yaya Toure at the Etihad Stadium last weekend.

The former Red Devils skipper, nicknamed ‘Captain Marvel’ in his playing days, feels the young England international is becoming a top quality central midfielder, though felt he needed to improve his goal tally.

Cleverley has just two goals to his name since breaking into the first team and Robson felt he would be a more complete centre-midfielder if he worked a bit more on his finishing.

However, the former Middlesbrough and West Brom manager was confident Cleverley could raise his game in that area as he has the perfect teacher in place to learn from.

“It is perfect for Tom as there is nobody better to learn from than Paul Scholes,” he told the Manchester Evening News.

“Scholesy is a clinical finisher and studying him in training at Carrington can only help Tom.

“He’s a conscientious lad who wants to improve because he wants to be in the United side every week.

“If he adds a little composure to his finishing then his output will increase because he does get into those areas to score.

“But these things are just little tweaks to help him. For me, last Sunday can be a big factor in Tom’s game and his future.”

Cleverley was very impressive in the derby victory that took Manchester United six points clear at the top of the Premier League and it would be a surprise if the 23-year-old did not retain his place in the starting XI for this weekend.

Ferguson’s men face Sunderland at Old Trafford on Saturday afternoon, where they are expected to continue the good form that has seen them win their last four games.
