Liverpool & Chelsea given encouragement in France striker chase

Published 2 Comments

Chelsea and Liverpool have been given a boost in their pursuit of in-form Lyon striker Bafetimbi Gomis from his recent comments.

According to the Daily Mail, the 27-year-old is being tracked by scouts from Anfield and Stamford Bridge, with a January transfer window bid a possibility.

Both Brendan Rodgers and Rafael Benitez will have been enthused by Gomis’ words in a recent interview with French broadcaster Canal +.

Chelsea and Liverpool have concerns in their respective centre-forward departments due to a lack of depth, so an interest in Gomis is unsurprising.

The France international is a tall, powerful forward and would be well suited to the formations deployed by Rodgers and Benitez, as both managers usually deploy a lone striker in their systems.

Gomis gave encouragement to both men by admitting interest from either club was a positive.

“I'm happy, but if it is for my interest, and the three parties are okay and I can progress, then yes. The interest is flattering,” he is quoted as saying in a Canal + interview.

“These are big names [Liverpool and Chelsea]. But I do not pollute my mind with the idea of a departure. Anything can go very quickly in football.”

Gomis has scored ten goals in 17 Ligue 1 stars so far this season, which makes him joint second top scorer behind PSG star Zlatan Ibrahimovic, who is already on 17 for the season.

Chelsea’s interest indicates a possible desire to provide Fernando Torres with some competition, as he is the only senior striker at the Blues and his form has left a lot to be desired since moving there from Liverpool.

Meanwhile, the Reds are in a similar situation except their current centre forward, Luis Suarez, is in terrific form and the thought of losing him for any significant amount of time will be worrying Rodgers.
