Portsmouth clung to two extraordinary first-half strikes - a dazzling lob by Jermain Defoe and a freak own goal by Nigel Reo-Coker - to climb above Aston Villa into sixth place following the 2-0 result.

Both sides finished with 10 men. Pompey´s Sulley Muntari was sent off for a second yellow card and Olof Mellberg of Villa went for similar offences soon afterwards.

But Scott Carson was probably the saddest figure of all after England manager Fabio Capello saw two mistakes by the Villa goalkeeper contribute to Pompey´s goals.
