Cristiano Ronaldo and Wayne Rooney fired Manchester United to within three points of Barclays Premier League leaders Arsenal as Newcastle were thrashed 5-1 at St James´ Park.
The Portugal international struck on the stroke of half-time and then 11 minutes after the break to set up another impressive victory.
However, it was Rooney who opened the scoring on 25 minutes and although Abdoulaye Faye pulled a goal back, Rooney and substitute Louis Saha stretched the lead with goals in the final 10 minutes.
