Former Tottenham and West Ham striker Frederic Kanoute has been named the 2007 African Footballer of the Year - ahead of Chelsea duo Didier Drogba, who won the award last year, and Michael Essien.

The Sevilla star becomes the first European-born player to claim the prize after he was born in France but plays his international football for Mali.

Kanoute´s team were knocked out of the African Nations Cup by Ivory Coast earlier this week after Drogba scored the opening goal in a 3-0 win.
