Alan Hutton was poised on Tuesday to become a Tottenham player and could be thrown in at the deep end for a weekend debut against Manchester United.

The 23-year-old Rangers right-back was in London to put the finishing touches to his £9million move and Gers boss Walter Smith admitted it would be hard to see Hutton move on.

"I know he was enjoying his football here and was not in too much of a rush to go anywhere, but as the weeks went on he has decided it is the right time for him to leave. We wish him well," Smith said.
