Shaun Maloney came off the bench to deny Sunderland victory as Aston Villa claimed a point in controversial circumstances in the 1-1 draw at the Stadium of Light.

The midfielder curled home a 73rd-minute free-kick as Villa belatedly reaped some reward for their dominance.

Danny Higginbotham had headed the home side in front with just 10 minutes gone, but Danny Collins saw an injury-time winner ruled out for a foul.
