Newcastle manager Sam Allardyce is hoping for a timely fitness boost as he attempts to head off a disaster at St James´ Park.

The 53-year-old takes his side to Blackburn on Saturday under intense pressure after a run of four matches which has yielded just one point and humiliating home defeats by Portsmouth and Liverpool but is lifted by the return to fitness of Abdoulaye Faye and Steven Taylor.

"We will see how he goes this week but we are hoping we may get Abdoulaye back for the weekend," he said. "He is a big player for us in defence. He is a powerful in the air and has the presence we need."
