Stern John´s crisp first-half strike gave Southampton a 1-0 win and three fortuitous points and ended Cardiff´s unbeaten away record in the Coca-Cola Championship at St Mary´s.

George Burley´s side were beaten play-off semi-finalists last season and moved to within a point of the top six with the win despite being second best to the Bluebirds for the majority of the game.

Trinidad & Tobago international John scored the only goal of the game in the 20th minute with a powerful left-foot strike but Cardiff boss Dave Jones will be wondering how his side failed to at least claim a point from a match they dominated throughout.
