David Bentley enhanced his England credentials with a brilliant 66th-minute strike to help steer Blackburn into the Carling Cup fourth round with a 3-0 win.

The 23-year-old, who was widely jeered when he made his senior international debut against Israel earlier this month, produced a delightful effort from 25 yards which flew into the top corner.

Matt Derbyshire added the second from the penalty spot 10 minutes later and substitute Roque Santa Cruz netted a late header to finally end the spirited resistance of an effectively reserve Birmingham side.
