Chelsea have been slammed for allowing Stamford Bridge legend Didier Drogba leave after their Champions League final glory in Munich.

Leeds United manager Neil Warnock said the Blues should have done more to keep hold of Drogba, rather than allowing him to leave for free at the end of last season.

He was speaking ahead of the two sides’ clash in the Capital One Cup quarter-final on Tuesday evening when he made the claim, citing Chelsea’s reliance on misfiring Fernando Torres in the centre-forward role.

Torres’ form has improved in recent weeks but he has not been able to reproduce the kind of form he showed at Liverpool to make him one of the most feared strikers in world football.

Drogba was keeping the Spaniard out of the side for much of last season and Warnock believes he should still be plying his trade at Stamford Bridge, not picking up a lucrative wage packet at Chinese side Shanghai Shenhua.

“They have clearly missed some experienced players through injury this season but if I was Chelsea manager the one I’d miss most is Didier Drogba,” the Evening Standard quotes Warnock as saying.

“I would have done anything to keep him if I was at Chelsea and yet they let him leave on a free transfer.

“He epitomised what Chelsea was all about when they won all those trophies and his goalscoring record was tremendous. I loved him as a player.”

Drogba was Chelsea’s star as the club won its first ever Champions League title; he scored the late equaliser to keep them in a one-sided game against Bayern Munich and then buried the deciding penalty in the shoot-out.
