Chelsea striker doesn't want Stamford Bridge return yet
Chelsea transfer news: Romelu Lukaku wants to continue loan spell away from Chelsea
Romelu Lukaku says he is not interested in returning to Stamford Bridge from his loan spell at West Brom in January.
The Belgian striker has excelled at the Hawthorns this season, and has so far scored six goals in 18 appearances, including a late winner in West Brom’s last Premier League outing against Norwich on Saturday.
Lukaku’s form has prompted some speculation he could be recalled to Chelsea in January in order to offer Blues boss Rafa Benitez more attacking options to help out leading man Fernando Torres.
Although the Spaniard has found form of late under Benitez, Daniel Sturridge’s seemingly imminent departure from Stamford Bridge leaves Chelsea looking thin on the ground in attack.
However Lukaku says he is keen to finish the season with West Brom, who, under former Chelsea assistant coach Steve Clarke are enjoying a strong season so far and currently occupy 7th, level on points with Arsenal in 4th.
"I want to stay here," he told Sky Sports. "I've had so many questions in the last few weeks asking 'are you staying?' I have a lot of contact with Chelsea, but they are asking questions about my development and I tell them I'm very happy to be here."
Despite that, Lukaku admitted he has not yet spoken to Rafa Benitez since the Spaniard was installed as Roberto di Matteo’s replacement in the Chelsea hot seat.
"I have not spoken to the manager (Benitez) but I know what is going on. For me, it is one year loan and then hopefully it may be one year again next season.
"I need to play as much as I can in the next two years. For me, it is very important to play week in and week out because, at 19, you want to develop and I hope to be one of the great players in the Premier League. That is my ambition but I have to be patient as well. I can learn a lot here, I can improve here.
"Chelsea know this season that I'm improving, and when I go back there, I want to be a much better player than when I arrived there.
"My main ambition is to start in the first XI in every game at Chelsea. Chelsea know I'm a player that is hungry to play football and they will benefit from that in the future."
