Manchester United went seven points clear at the top of the Premier League table after they claimed a dramatic 4-3 win over Newcastle United at Old Trafford.

The Magpies took the lead three times through James Perch, a Jonny Evans own goal and Papiss Cisse, only to be pegged back each time by Evans, Patrice Evra and Robin van Persie.

And then, in injury time, Javier Hernandez struck a winner to make sure Manchester United earned all three points, taking full advantage of cross-town rivals Manchester City's 1-0 loss against Sunderland at the Stadium of Light.

The result will be a bitter blow for Magpies manager Alan Pardew, although he will have been buoyed by the performance of his players, who came agonisingly close to beating the Red Devils on their own patch for the first time since 1972.

All the ingredients were there for an eventful encounter, on a rain-sodden pitch on Boxing Day. And, with the hosts fielding a weakened side without ill and injured attacking trio Wayne Rooney, Danny Welbeck and Ashley Young, the visitors must have sensed the potential for an upset.

But, Sir Alex Ferguson's side is not one to settle for a point, and after hitting the post moments after drawing level for a third time, Hernandez timed his run to perfection to guide home Michael Carrick's inch-perfect cross, and send the United supporters into raptures at the full-time whistle.
