Liverpool are being linked with a shock January move for Wigan Athletic striker Franco Di Santo.

Reds boss Brendan Rodgers is keeping tabs on the one-cap Argentine international, according to The Daily Mirror, and knows the 23-year-old from their time together at Chelsea.

Despite failing to become a regular during his time with the Blues, the paper claims that Rodgers remains an admirer of the player, and could sign him for free at the end of the season when his contract expires at the DW Stadium.

Whilst Latics boss Roberto Martinez has insisted that he hopes to keep Di Santo publicly, the club’s hierarchy fear an exit is on the cards at the end of the current campaign, according to the report.

Liverpool have a lack of striking options at Anfield, with the manager looking to find a partner for Uruguayan international Luis Suarez. The former Ajax star has been carrying the goalscoring burden alone this season in the absence of Fabio Borini (injury) and Andy Carroll (loan).

Di Santo is a player Rodgers ‘rates, trusts and believes’, the report claims, and would also fit into the style of play trying to be embedded on Merseyside by their summer managerial appointment.

And, with Daniel Sturridge set to join Liverpool in a £12 million move this January, an area of weakness could become one of strength next season for the Europa League challengers.
