Manchester United & Arsenal on collision course over £17m Dutchman
Arsenal, Manchester United transfer news: Emirates Stadium & Old Trafford to tussle over £17m Kevin Strootman
Manchester United and Arsenal look set to be battling out for emerging Dutch star Kevin Strootman in January.
According to The Sun, both Arsene Wenger and Sir Alex Ferguson are resolved to try and capture the 22-year-old during the forthcoming transfer window in a bid to bolster their respective midfields.
The report claims a bid in the region of £17million is required to convince PSV Eindhoven to agree a deal for Strootman, though it claims he is more likely to leave than stay.
“It looks certain that he will leave in January. The only question is where?” said a source at the Eredivisie club quoted in the report.
“It looks like Manchester United or Arsenal — they are both very keen.”
Links with Old Trafford could be to do with the concerns over the lack of top quality midfield resources and no current viable replacement for Paul Scholes in the deep-lying playmaker role.
Meanwhile, Arsenal have been struggling to dominate this season and Mikel Arteta has been forced to play a more defensive role following the injury to Abou Diaby, so Wenger’s interest in Strootman could be a signal that he has given up hope of the French midfielder ever being fit for a prolonged period.
Strootman is tall, powerful midfielder and, according to the report, has been hailed as ‘the new Mark van Bommel’, though he has more attacking tendencies than the former Holland and Bayern Munich captain.
