Barcelona utility man Javier Mascherano said Camp Nou superstar Lionel Messi plays like he has been touched by a magic wand, after the Argentina captain scored another brace.
Messi hit two goals or more in a game for the 14th time this season while wearing a Barcelona shirt, as the Catalan club overcame Cordoba 2-0 in the first leg of their Copa del Rey tie on Wednesday evening.
Sunday’s 2-1 win over Real Betis saw Messi score his 85th & 86th goal of 2012, breaking Gerd Muller’s record by one, set in 1972.
Messi is now on 88 goals for the year and he has another two games left in the year to add to the record – although the Zambian FA recently challenged the record and claimed Zambian striker Godfrey Chitalu scored 107 times in 1972.
They are set to send evidence if this to FIFA as the governing body did not recognise the record before now.
Mascherano was not overly bothered by talk of it being a record, he was just amazed that Messi scoring such an amount of goals can be discussed almost as if it is normal.
The former Liverpool man even went so far as to declare his international team-mate as the best ever.
"Messi is unique, he’s the best player in the history of the sport. The numbers say so," he told the official Barcelona website.
"We’re talking about 88 goals as if it were normal - what he’s done is incredible. Messi has been touched by a magic wand."
