Sunderland´s hopes of landing £6million Wigan full-back Leighton Baines appear to have been dashed after he was included in the Latics squad for Wednesday night´s pre-season friendly at Blackpool.

Roy Keane was given permission to talk to the 22-year-old defender - who has been recovering from a virus - earlier this week after having had three previous bids rejected. However, as speculation mounted that Everton had tabled a counter-bid for the Liverpool-born player, Wigan´s official website, wiganlatics.co.uk, claimed he would not be heading for the Stadium of Light.

A statement on the club´s official website said: "Leighton is finally over his virus. He trained for the first time this summer on Tuesday and he will be involved in some capacity on Wednesday night."
