Michael Owen has revealed his pride at breaking his hero Gary Lineker´s record to become England´s highest goalscorer in competitive matches.

Owen moved one clear of Lineker with his 23rd goal for his country in either World Cup or European Championship matches by netting against Estonia on Wednesday, increasing his tally for England to 37 in 82 internationals although the Newcastle striker is still 11 behind Lineker in the overall scoring charts and 12 adrift of record goalscorer Sir Bobby Charlton.

Owen said: "It is always nice to score goals and to break that record of Gary Lineker is fantastic. He was an England great and he was my idol when I was a kid."
