Arsenal are lining up a cut-price swoop for Manchester United winger Nani, and will use the Robin Van Persie deal as leverage, according to the Daily Mail.

The report claims the Gunners have opened negotiations with United over a potential January transfer for Nani, but Chelsea are also monitoring the situation. And while the Old Trafford club are believed to want £20m for the Portugal international, Arsenal are thought to be keen to strike a deal at a much lower price.

Nani has fallen down the pecking order at Old Trafford this season, with Antonio Valencia and Ashley Young preferred to the former-Sporting Lisbon star in wide-areas.

And Arsenal think they can use the Robin Van Persie deal as leverage to secure the signing of Nani at a cheaper price. The north London club are ready to remind United of the relatively smooth negotiations involved in the Van Persie transfer, and are reportedly seeking similarly pain-free talks this time around.

The Dutch striker’s £24m move to Old Trafford was conducted fairly quickly, once it became plain that Van Persie wanted to leave, and that United wanted to sign him.

Arsenal hope to use the good-will generated from the deal as a bargaining tool as they look to bring Nani to the Emirates Stadium.

But the Daily Mail also reports Chelsea are considering a January move for the winger. The Stamford Bridge side are expected to be active next month, with Rafa Benitez believed to be willing to strengthen the squad as they push for the Premier League title.

A new striker is likely to be recruited, but the report claims Nani could also be an option for the European champions.
