Redknapp keen to seal Distin deal

Portsmouth are confident of tying up a £40,000-a-week deal to take French defender Sylvain Distin from Manchester City on a free transfer before the end of the week.

Pompey manager Harry Redknapp, a long-time admirer of the 29-year-old centre-half, is set to pull off another transfer coup after the move which captured Sol Campbell from Arsenal on a free last summer.

Redknapp has described 6ft 4in Distin, who cost City £4million when he signed from Paris St Germain in May 2002, as "possibly the best free signing of the summer for someone".
