Morecambe hero Danny Carlton admitted he may never score a better goal in his life after his late Wembley thunderbolt shot the Lancashire minnows into the Football League for the first time in their 87-year history.

With their Conference play-off final against Exeter locked at 1-1 and extra time looming, Carlton defied his heavy legs for one last burst as he chased a long clearance, held off two defenders and fired a superb left-footed strike past City keeper Paul Jones from 25 yards.

"I didn´t fancy running past the defenders so I just thought I´d shoot," said Carlton, a 23-year-old Leeds-born forward who joined the Shrimps aged 15. "There couldn´t have been a better ending. It´s the best goal I´ve ever scored and it probably will be the best goal of my life."
