Manchester United are reportedly planning to make a move for Athletic Bilbao striker Fernando Llorente, when the Spain international becomes a free agent at the end of the season.

Llorente will be free to speak to suitors when the January transfer window opens and, according to the Sunday Mirror, Manchester United will be among the clubs looking to secure his signature.

The 27-year-old, who has also been linked with Arsenal and Liverpool, has long since been expected to leave Athletic Bilbao, and confirmed at the weekend that this season would be his last with the club.

"I'm leaving Athletic," Llorente told Tuttosport. "The truth is that the project is very good and for me it's a pain, an absolute sadness not to play next year in the new San Mames, but football is like that."

It would now appear that Old Trafford could be a potential destination for Llorente with Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson reported to be keen to add another striker to his ranks.

Manchester United already have Robin van Persie, Wayne Roony, Javier Hernandez and Danny Welbeck among their number, but signing Llorente for nothing may prove too difficult to resist for Ferguson.

The Old Trafford boss has also been linked with a bid for Borussia Dortmund star Robert Lewandowski.
