Tottenham are reportedly in pole position to land Schalke midfielder Lewis Holtby, with the Germany international likely to favour a switch to White Hart Lane over a transfer to Arsenal.

Holtby is out of contract in the summer so is free to speak to other clubs from January onwards, and Tottenham and Arsenal have been installed as two of the leading candidates to sign him.

But, according to The Independent, it is likely to be Tottenham who win the race to sign the 22-year-old on a free transfer, despite Arsenal wanting to bring Holtby to the Emirates Stadium.

Although Schalke could be tempted to cash-in on Holtby during the January transfer window, the young playmaker is expected to agree a pre-contract before leaving the Bundesliga at the end of the season.

Along with Spurs and Arsenal, Holtby is also reported to have received an offer from Liverpool, while Inter Milan and Valencia are also credited with interest.

Holtby has played a prominent role in helping Schalke into the knockout stages of this season's Champions League, and featured in the Group B victory and draw against Arsenal.
