When Paul Scholes made his Manchester United debut at Port Vale in the League Cup in 1994/95, few could predict that he would go on to become one of, if not the best passer of the ball in world football.

And with reports suggesting that Scholes is considering hanging up his boots for a second time at the end of the current campaign, questions will be asked as to who can fill the void the veteran midfielder would inevitably leave.

The 38-year-old United legend has become one of the most decorated players in the modern game, winning a whole host of trophies during his 12-year stint in United's first-team.

A guy who is most renowned for his passing ability, as well as his infamous ill-timed tackles, Scholes is regarded as one of the best midfielders in the game, even though he is coming into the twilight of his career.

The thing which stands out about Scholes is his technique and vision, and his undoubted ability to send eye-catching long-balls and killer passes into the attacking third - Scholes has been an integral part of Manchester United's success in years gone by.

There can only be one Paul Scholes, but everyone has their time to finish. And Scholes is no different. He cannot last forever and continue to boss the midfield like he has done throughout the years. Someone has to step up and take his place, and I think the solution lies within. Step forward, Wayne Rooney.

If their is one man who can replace the former England international, it has to be Rooney. Rooney has shown he has similar qualities to his United colleague, and at 27-years-old, he is just going to get better and better.

Tried and tested and hugely appreciated by everyone connected to United, Rooney has looked as comfortable as he has ever been while operating in a deeper role. With a string of world-class performances in the position that Scholes has made his own, Rooney is the obvious choice to succeed Scholes - who has made 466 league appearances for the club.

I truly believe that Rooney can 'do a Scholes' for many years to come. Sir Alex Ferguson has already demonstrated he trusts Rooney in midfield, and with the fans backing, Rooney can ensure that when Scholes does eventually retire, his absence isn't felt for too long.
