Arsenal make formal approach for €17m Barcelona star

Published 53 Comments

Arsenal have reportedly made a formal approach for Barcelona striker David Villa as Arsene Wenger looks to recruit goalscoring reinforcements during the January transfer window.

Villas has seen opportunities with Barcelona become increasingly limited and, according to Goal.com, Arsenal have made a move to sign the Spain international.

Arsenal are reportedly willing to pay €17 million to sign Villa from Barcelona, and are ready to match the €136,000-a-week wages he currently receives at the Camp Nou.

It is claimed Arsenal boss Wenger is a long-term admirer of Villa and has been informed that the 31-year-old is interested in joining the Gunners during the transfer window.

Barcelona, though, remain reluctant to sell Villa and, should the Catalan giants keep hold of the Spaniard, Arsenal will reportedly press ahead with another bid for Atletico Madrid's Adrian Lopez.

Arsenal remain in need of numbers in their goalscoring with the summer acquisitions of Olivier Giroud and Lukas Podolski not sufficiently compensating for the departure of captain Robin van Persie.
