Former Liverpool star John Barnes believes Daniel Sturridge is the best possible recruit the club could have made during the January transfer window.
Sturridge joined Liverpool from Chelsea on Wednesday for a fee reported to be in the region of £12 million, and will provide support for Anfield favourite Luis Suarez.
The 23-year-old has failed to really get going in a stop-star career at Manchester City and Chelsea, Liverpool boss Brendan Rodgers has called Sturridge's transfer to Merseyside his last chance to make it at a big club.
With Sturridge's reputation and level of promise, Barnes sees the England international as an ideal acquisition for Liverpool - and says Rodgers has performed an excellent piece of business in bringing him to Anfield.
"I think Daniel Sturridge is a very good player," he told ESPN. "January is not a good time to sign players, so therefore I don't think you can get better than him in January.
"Any of the top, world-class players that you want might not be available in January as they are playing in the Champions League. However, he's young, he's English, he's hungry, and he has a point to prove. It's exciting."
Sturridge joined Chelsea from Manchester City in 2009 and scored 15 goals in 55 appearances during his spell at Stamford Bridge, before leaving for Liverpool earlier this week.
