Barnsley are hoping the lure of a return to English football will help convince Inverness boss Terry Butcher to turn his back on what could be a glorious season north of the border and accept the vacant manager's job at Oakwell.
The South Yorkshire club, currently bottom of the npower Championship, are looking to appoint their sixth manager in seven and a half years following the sacking last month of Keith Hill.
They received permission from Inverness to approach former England skipper Butcher, 54, on Monday and hope to meet with him this week to thrash out a deal that would see him swap the top two of the Scottish Premier League for a relegation scrap in English football's second tier.
