Del Bosque beats La Liga duo to Coach of the Year award

Published 1 Comments

Spain national coach Vicente del Bosque scooped the FIFA World Coach of the Year award ahead of Pep Guardiola and Jose Mourinho at the FIFA Ballon d’Or gala last night.

Del Bosque claimed the award after becoming the first coach to win three consecutive major international tournaments in row, a run which culminated in Spain’s victorious Euro 2012 campaign last summer.

Speaking after the award ceremony, the 62-year-old admitted he was delighted to see two Spanish coaches amongst the three finalists for the award.

"It is a real pleasure and I take pride that two Spanish coaches are in the top three because our country is at the top of football today," he said in a press conference.

"Formerly we went abroad to pick up players but now not so much, and we are now at the very highest level and there lies one of the main factors why we are where we are."

As a Spanish representative, I'm happy seeing all these players in the Fifa team. We're all Spanish players or players playing in Spain, so that reflects the wonderful moment we are living.

"Our players have an enormous value and today we've seen it."

The Spaniard claimed 34.51% of the votes to put him ahead of Real Madrid boss Jose Mourinho, who polled 20.49% of the votes.

Mourinho helped Real Madrid claim their first La Liga title for four seasons ahead of arch-rivals Barcelonalast time round.

Guardiola, who stepped down as Barcelona’s most successful manager of all time last summer, earned 12.91% of the votes to come home in third place.

The former Barcelona midfielder claimed 14 trophies in his four-year spell at the club, the last of which coming in his final game in charge at the Nou Camp in the Copa del Rey final against Athletic Bilbao.
