Cristiano Ronaldo was afforded a standing ovation by home fans at the Santiago Bernabeu, as he single-handedly ripped apart Celta Vigo with a hat-trick and an assist in Real Madrid's emphatic 4-0 victory in the Copa del Rey last night.
It was as if the frustrations of missing out on yet another FIFA Ballon d'Or award to Barcelona's Lionel Messi was released with a simply stunning display, as the Portuguese forward continued his sensational start to 2013, making it five goals in just two games this calendar year.
Ronaldo opened the scoring with a terrific strike from out on the left touchline, reacting first to a quickly taken throw-in before blasting the ball past a helpless visiting goalkeeper.
His second saw him latch on to a perfectly weighted defence-splitting pass from Luka Modric, lashing home with a left-footed effort on the half-volley to double Real Madrid's lead.
The former Manchester United star completed his hat-trick in the second-half after another menacing run down the left before blasting low under the goalkeeper, to take his season's tally to 28 goals, with an overall total of 175 goals in 173 matches for Real Madrid.
After the hat-trick was completed, the Bernabeu faithful rose as one to hail their star man Ronaldo, singing "Cristiano, Balón de Oro" – which can be seen on the video below.
And, Ronaldo wasn't finished there. He could have notched a fourth goal if he hadn't been wrongly denied by a linesman's offside flag, with replays proving the strike should have stood.
However, it did little to take the gloss off of another mesmerising display from one of the leading kings of Spain, as Real Madrid progressed to the quarter-finals, lining up a clash with Valencia in the next round.
