An amateur cup final in Chile descended into chaos as a referee and his two assistants were attacked by supporters and players.

The clash between Baquedano and Pablo Lizama was in extra-time when a player took particular exception to a decision, but after appearing to gain control of the situation, chaos ensued as a female supporter struck the referee.

A karate-kick from one of the players followed, and as a linesmen moved in to try and protect his colleague, he too was struck down to the ground.

Both men were violently assaulted by members of the Pablo Lizama side, who along with a number of supporters managed to break teeth and leave the defenceless men bloodied and bruised on the floor.

"Unfortunately football has too many players like this," Jorrit Smink, a former coach of the Melipilla Primera B side, told website ‘I Love Chile’, according to The Daily Mail.

"The surprising thing is that the only people who work at FIFA are mafia types and complete idiots. That works from the top down."

The incident does little for the image of respect in football, and comes just months after a linesman in Holland was killed after being beaten-up by three teenagers.
