Barcelona can hardly be called a one-man team but Lionel Messi is almost an ever-present in the side, so the Catalan club had a small point to prove in their recent Copa del Rey romp.

A player being linked with a move away from Camp Nou was the star of the show in Barcelona’s 5-0 thrashing of Cordoba on Thursday night; David Villa scored a sublime brace to help send the defending champions through to the quarter-finals.

Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger has been heavily linked with a move for Spain’s record scorer at international level and his first goal goes some way to explain why a 31-year-old is still commanding a fee reportedly in the region of £16million.

He ghosted past two players in the box before dinking a delightful finish over the goalkeeper to double Barça’s lead.

Villa’s second was a perfect example of why he has scored so many goal in his career; a hint of space in the box, a lay off from a teammate and an arrowed finish into the bottom corner.

The former Valencia man’s brace was sandwiched by a double from Alexis Sanchez and the opener from Thiago Alcantara.

A good night for Barcelona – Lionel Messi didn’t even need to leave the substitutes’ bench.
