Manchester United striker Robin Van Persie has been named the Premier League player of the month for December.
The Old Trafford forward hit five goals in six games for Sir Alex Ferguson's side during the month, as Manchester United extended their lead over Manchester City to seven points.
The Red Devils won five, drew one and lost one during December, scoring 17 goals over the course of the month. Van Persie proved to be the match winner on several occasions, scoring critical goals against Manchester City and West Bromwich Albion.
And speaking to manutd.com, Van Persie revealed his delight at scooping the award.
"It was a big month for us," he told the club's official website. "You have certain periods during a season when it goes your way and December was one of those periods."
The Holland international joined United from Arsenal in a £24m transfer last August, and has settled into his new surroundings quickly, hitting 20 goals in just 26 appearances. He leads the race for the Golden Boot with 16 league goals already this season - Van Persie won the award last year with 30 goals.
The Premier League pace-setters face a crunch fixture on Sunday, as they take on Liverpool at Old Trafford. Title rivals Manchester City face Arsenal at the Emirates Stadium.
The defending champions slipped to a 1-0 defeat to the Gunners on their last visit, a loss which looked at that stage to have cost them the chance to win their first Premier League title. But they recovered to snatch glory away from United on the final day of the season.
